Welcome to another world of mobile 'pimpin'. This post will guide your way to set up your phones internet connection. Please if you find this post useful and important and will like your friends to know you can use the share buttons bellow to share the post with your friends, thank you. So let's get started.
To set up an internet connection in a phone, the phone must be GPRS enabled. The GPRS core network is the central part of the General Packet Radio Service which allows 2G, 3G and WCDMA
mobile networks to transmit IP packets to external networks such as the Internet. The GPRS system is an integrated part of the GSM
network switching subsystem.
Services offered
GPRS extends the GSM Packet circuit switched data capabilities and makes the following services possible:- SMS messaging and broadcasting
- File manipulation functions
- Active process block process
- "Always on" internet access
- Multimedia messaging service (MMS)
- Push to talk over cellular (PoC)
- Instant messaging and presence—wireless village
- Internet applications for smart devices through wireless application protocol (WAP)
- Point-to-point (P2P) service: inter-networking with the Internet (IP)
- Point-to-Multipoint (P2M) service: point-to-multipoint multicast and point-to-multipoint group calls
Usability
The maximum speed of a GPRS connection offered in 2003 was similar to a modem connection in an analog wire telephone network, about 32-40 kbit/s, depending on the phone used. Latency is very high; round-trip time (RTT) is typically about 600-700 ms and often reaches 1 s. GPRS is typically prioritized lower than speech, and thus the quality of connection varies greatly. So accessing the internet on Phone is done via Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) it is a technical standard for accessing information over a mobile wireless network. A WAP browser is a web browser for mobile devices such as mobile phones (called "cellular phones" in some countries) that uses the protocol.
The most important code in setting up your phone is the Access Point Name (APN)
An access point is:
- An IP network to which a mobile can be connected
- A set of settings which are used for that connection
- A particular option in a set of settings in a mobile phone
So to set up your Phone there are basically two methods, which are
- Automatic method
- Manual configuration
Secondly is the manual configuration of your phone internet connectivity. This method is actually for those phones that cant be automatically configured by the network or another problem associated with the automatic method. These method involves inserting some given codes by your network providers into your phone connection settings. They include APN, IP, Port, Homepage, Username, and Password.
In other to obtain these codes you can visite a your network providers' customer care and request for the codes or visite the official web address of your network providers' to get the codes. For people living in Nigeria you Can check my post on INTERNET CONFIGURATION FOR NETWORKS IN NIGERIA .
So after getting these codes what you need to do is to locate where Internet/Connection/Configuration settings is and insert the codes that you had.
NB: there are phones that you have to set up a data account before you set up the internet settings (like China Phones and Sony Ericssoon) so take note. And also if you want to use an application to connect (e.g opera-mini, 2go, Nimbuzz etc.) You will need to set up Access point in phones like Nokia or Java settings in some phones.
Let me show you How to set up your NOKIA Phone as an example.
- Press menu
- Go to settings
- Locate configuration
- Move and open personal account
- Press menu
- And click on add new account
- Put in all the details you had
- Finish and press ok
- Press menu on the new account
- Activate the new account
